Tea for Thought

It seems as if every day there are reports on the news, talk shows and internet about the health benefits of tea. With so many new stories and ideas, it can get a little confusing! We wanted to break it down for you and the bottom line is — tea is great for your health. We will be blogging two posts about these health benefits. This first one will give you backgrounds on how and why tea is so beneficial to your body.

Why tea? While most people enjoy tea because of its wide variety of delicious flavors and aromas, the warmth and relaxation it provides, tea is also natural, health-enhancing beverage that is high in antioxidants. Naturally, tea contains no additives, preservatives, sodium, fat or sugar and is cholesterol free.

What are the ingredients that make tea so healthy?
Tea contains flavonoids, naturally occurring compounds that are proven to have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals, which if present can contribute to cardiovascular diseases, cancers and Alzheimers. Tea also contains additional immune system-boosting compounds.

Does it matter what kind of tea I drink? Research has shown that all varieties of tea leaves have beneficial qualities. Black, green, white and oolong tea leaves come from the Camellia sinensis tree and all generally contain the same amount of flavonoids.
